In 1385 a dangerous rebellion convinced Niccolò II d’Este that it was necessary to build a powerful defence for his family: this was the reason why the castle was built, to defend the duke against the population.
In that period the building was a massive fortress; the moat around the castle, the drawbridges and the towers date back to that age.
A covered passage, still existing, connected the military building to the marquis’ palace ( today Municipal Palace).
Passing time the risk of rebellion stopped and Estense Castle of Ferrara became the beautiful residence of the court and it was enriched with covered roof-terraces, marble balconies, a renaissance courtyard (at that time completely frescoed) and magnificent apartments.

A vast sea-shore, where it’s possible to play any kind of seaside-sport, first of all beach volley, but also beach tennis, basket, five-a-site football.
The water is not very deep so to allow learning to swim also the youngest boys and girls, and the practice of the newest sea-sports.
A lot of green spaces and small pine woods up to the Valley that is in the southern part of the beach, with a unique natural environment.
There are also a lot of pubs, discothèques, meeting places and entertainments for everybody. The characteristic of Lido delle Nazioni is the lake, where you can practice water skiing, canoeing, rowing, sailing (there’s a famous sail school).
There’re riding grounds and schools, where you can learn to go horse riding with beautiful horses and enjoy natural courses through channels and embankments, in a surprising landscape.
